rolling fields and tree filled mountains, sit down on his land and watch in awe as the glorious colors explode into the sky. This is very important for our patriotic morale. The message we are sending is also important.
By placing fire works so close to water, and even lighting some so that they are held mere inches above the water, we are going against everything that Rappahannock stands for. It is not only that the fire works are being released directly next to the water, so that debris enters the pond, but there were even ground fireworks attached to the dock that expelled fire, ash and chemicals directly into the lake. The environmental integrity of having a bonfire next to the lake, burning the boxes in which the fire works came, is also questionable.
The point that is being made here is bigger than this particular pond. We must realize that the way in which this celebration is executed is defining the norm for those that are witnesses and, as our yearly identifying ritual, it is also laying the foundation for what this and following generations find acceptable.
Rappahannock, a community so close to the capital of the United States, has held its ground for years against development that is closing in on all sides. In addition this community is actively fighting against environmental degradation. This is commendable. We need to become increasingly aware of our actions so we may maintain and continue this commendable position.
There are many within this community that are putting an incredible amount of energy into preserving the water we are so casually giving permission to corrupt.
