weatherman, Bob Ryan. In addition, Headwaters presented five mini-grants, totaling $2087.65, to both high school and elementary school teachers to support activities ranging from CPR instruction to the painting of an 8’ x 4’ mural at the high school’s entrance.

Learning
Amy Gubler, Grade 2-3 Instructional Team Leader, and Liz Purcell, Grade 6-8 Instructional Team Leader, reported on activities in their respective areas. Ms. Gubler noted that her team was established to examine instructional needs and to develop strategies to “help all students to learn”. Her team decided upon an eighty percent mastery level, and that mastery learning techniques would be employed to aid students below that level. She also spoke of their program of recognizing student accomplishments: student voting for their classmate who best exemplifies each character virtue for the month; art, music, library and PE awards; and teacher’s choice awards. Liz Purcell spoke of her team’s new organizational approach whereby sixth and seventh grade team members combine with support and special education staff, and the eighth grade to “focus on instructional issues to better meet student needs.” Her team has analyzed last years state SOL test results to refine curricula to “better meet mastery objectives” for the SOL’s.
