Dr. David Gangel presented his draft budget before last night’s monthly meeting of the Rappahannock County School Board. The proposed budget, filling forty-five legal-sized pages, amounted to $7,682,692.22 for the upcoming fiscal year, an increase of some $379,000 over the current budget. If the budget remains unmodified through the review process, the county’s share of this increase will amount to $93,644.07, or 2.1 percent over the 1998-1999 budget.
The largest increase in the proposed budget is the additional three percent allocation for salaries—an increase totaling $283,353. Dr. Gangel noted that the salary schedules have undergone major revision, from what is a “hodgepodge” to a more “symmetrical” system. In the professional salary schedule, for example, the base pay of $25,302 is increased by 1—9 percent through each of the schedule’s 31 steps.
