Sharks, sea turtles, moray eels, tarpons, tropical fish of all variety, dolphins and even whales are seen regularly by snorkelers and scuba divers. Mongooses, wild donkeys, a full variety of tropical birds, iguanas and lizards of all sizes reside in the hills.
Restaurants range from elegant to open-air. Our favorite was bay-side Sogo’s, as good (and as cheap) as any on the island. Two grocery stores kept our cottage refrigerator stocked. Most produce is imported, as is most meat and dry goods. St. John is famed not only as a spice island but also for a high cost of living.
Still, packing lunches allowed us to trek deep into the island’s “dry rain forests” and hike hours to reach some of the most remote beaches which we then had totally to ourselves for the entire day.
