around teams rather than individuals and is an over night but not all day affair. Each team raises money by soliciting friends, neighbors, local merchants and others to sponsor them by making financial contributions. At the relay itself, each team has at least one member walking on the track throughout the night.
The event has also become a big slumber party with team members and their families and friends camping and sleeping (sometimes !) but also celebrating with food and other festivities. By tradition, the first lap of the relay is walked by survivors of cancer.
Another feature of the relay consists of the “luminaria”. These candles which are placed in paper bags and used to illuminate the walking path. Each is a memorial
