Long ago, when I was teaching and banding birds captured at a bird feeder in Alexandria, a * mockingbird declared the whole area his own. Any bird venturing to peck at seeds was driven away with the result that my seventh grade bird banders were having no success in capturing birds in wire traps.
A trap was baited with raisins; the mockingbird was captured. There was cheering among the students. We placed a numbered aluminum band on the bird’s leg and drove five miles down the road. There we released the bird at the home of a mockingbird-less student. His father was a psychiatrist who happened to be at home.
“Why did you bring the bird here?” he asked.
His son answered, “Because he is mean!”
“Am I supposed to rehabilitate him?” asked the doctor.
When we returned to my home, the site of the bird feeder and banding station, the mockingbird was there in the yard, diving at a cardinal. He beat us back. What is five miles to a mockingbird?
