entire center portion of the island and the surrounding sea. The undeveloped land, steep and forested, make the 27square miles seem much, much larger. In short, it is in truth not only a tropical paradise, but a protected one, too.
Anyway, a few phone calls to the Territorial Court on St. Thomas, seat of the USVI government, yielded applications for a marriage license and a mountain of brochures listing wedding services, chapels, resorts and ceremony options. The government literature listed telephone numbers for churches in the islands, photographers, musicians, florists and more.
As for our ceremony, we just needed a minister — I figured I could just pick a wildflower for a bouquet (there were lots in the tourist board brochure pictures) and bully a tourist for ceremony snapshots. We selected the Rev. Warren Smith of St. Ursula’s Anglican church on St. John from our wedding planner literature. A charming native, Rev. Smith was most welcoming and agreed, over the telephone, to perform a simple Episcopal service on Dec. 5. He did require (as is the Episcopal tradition) pre-marital counseling, which Harold and I completed prior to our trip. We packed our shorts and swimsuits and were ready to go.
