A history primer
St. John was formed in the volcanic explosion beneath the sea that created all the U.S., British, Dutch and French virgins. Prehistoric Indians working thenway north from South America stopped at St. John because the fishing was good there: archeologists have found shell heaps dating to 700 B.C.
The first Indians on St. John, the peaceful, nomadic Arawaks, were conquered by the fierce, cannibalistic Carib Indians. In 1493, Christopher Columbus bumped into the islands, thinking he’d found the back way to India. He was aware of European St. Ursula who had taken 11,000 nuns on a crusade to India around the same time. So, Columbus christened the jewel-like “Virgin” Islands.
