Slaves revolted in 1733, holding the island for six months. Aid from the French army helped the Danish put down the revolution, but sugar beets (which do not require a tropical clime) were cultivated and the sugar trade died off. Slaves were freed in 1848.
Virgin Islanders became U.S. citizens in 1917 when the government purchased the island from Denmark for $24 million as a military base. (It was never built.)
