Sherertz and his wife, Meg, moved to Gid Brown Hollow nearly ten years ago from Northern Virginia. Bom in Alexandria, Sherertz served in the U.S. Army from 1968 until 1970. He was initially based at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. where he worked for a few months with the Military Police. In 1969 and 1970, he served in Vietnam.
Sherertz joined the Fairfax County Police Department in 1974. There, he served as a Crime Analyst, developing automated analysis systems to track criminals, and as Senior Master Police Officer, where his duties included training established officers and recruits.
His tenure with Fairfax County Police gave Sherertz an opportunity to develop new initiatives and ideologies. Among them is a concept known as “Directed Patrol”. The idea is to concentrate officers and resources into problem areas within a jurisdiction.
This proved successful in combating crime there, so he is implementing it here. Sherertz says, however, that it is too soon to tell how it is working. Other programs Sherertz founded in Fairfax County include the Mountain Bike Patrol Unit.
Last June, Settle hired Sherertz as a Lieutenant in charge of criminal investigations. Sherertz also conducted hiring background and administrative investigations. Ib be appointed Sheriff, Sherertz went through a selection process, and had to appear before four circuit court judges.
