I’ve been quite happy with the display achieved by allowing the 6-foot-long vines to ramble down a steep slope beside the driveway. As long as these plants are skipped when the rest of the beds are fertilized, they give an abundant show of yellow, orange, and crimson flowers.
Morning glory received a name change between the seed catalogs of 1881 and 1991, moving from the genus and species Convolvulus major to Ipomea purpuria.
In Richard Frotcher’s Almanac and Garden Manual from 1881 is a comment that it grows almost anywhere, which is certainly an understatement.
However, with too much fertilizer and water it will produce abundant foliage and few flowers. A number of cultivars are available, including Heavenly Blue, Pearly Gates, and Scarlet O’Hara, if you would like to cover a fence in patriotic colors.
