Recently, Continuing Education at Carver-Piedmont made
great strides in the local area. We offered a new program, a program that started small and we hope will grow with time. Although the program has many names, depending on what area you are from, it serves the same purpose all over the place. The program I am referring to is called “Computers 4 Keeps” and it serves residents in our four county area, Culpeper, Madison, Orange, and Rappahannock.
We were blessed with a donation of 20 computers, (model 486’s) which in turn, we donated to the public in our “Computers 4 Keeps” class. The only cost to the student was a small tuition and book fee, this paid the instructors salary and allowed the students to take home a manual. The students were given instruction on how to assemble and disassemble the computer and also on the software that was loaded onto the computer. They will receive a total of ten hours of classroom time, as well as a computer to keep for their own at the end of class.
Many people can not, for one reason or another, afford to buy a computer. We feel fortunate to be able to participate in this program, and hope to aid many of our residents in obtaining their first computer through our “Computers 4 Keeps” program in the future.
