Little Necks are 11/2 to 21/3 inches in size, Top Necks are 21/2 inches, Cherrystones run 21/2 to 31/2 inches and Chowders are 31/2 inches or larger. The largest, also known as “quahogs,” are best suited for chowders, fritters or stuffing. Virginia, the nation’s third largest producer of seafood and the largest on the east coast, harvests some of the world’s best clams and is a leader in the aqua-culture of this shellfish.
