ing effects. But massage can also be used to treat a wide variety of illnesses and conditions, as illustrated by the following three examples:

• A study by researchers at the University of Miami School of Medicine and Duke University Medical School compared the effects of massage and relaxation therapy on asthmatic children. Thirtytwo asthmatic children were randomly assigned to receive either massage or relaxation therapy from their parents, who were taught how to administer the treatments. For a period of 30 days, the children received 20 minute treatments each day before bedtime.

The younger children in the study showed a decrease in behavioral anxiety and levels of the stress hormone, cortisol, immediately after receiving massage therapy. Over the study period, their pulmonary functions improved, as well as their attitudes about their disease. Older children also experienced improvement, but not to the same degree as the younger children.

• Adolescent girls suffering from bulimia who received massage treatments were compared with a control group receiving standard therapy.
