They wrote, "We'ue had as many as five or six Indigo Buntings around our feeder. What a color feast to see the bright goldfinches, indigoes, and perhaps a cardinal or two with the sunlgiht bouncing off them."
This was followed by a question about the female and juvenile Indigo Bunting. It is a pleasure to answer questions from a letter that made me almost see the bright birds.
In answer to the question about the female Indigo Bunting, I will quote from Roger tory Peterson’s “A Field Guide to the Birds.” He aptly described her as, “Plain brown; breast paler, with indistinct streaks; a small brown finch devoid of obvious stripes, wing bars or other marks.” Other writers refer to a bit of blue on the female’s shoulder, wings or tail.
