The Board of Supervisors favorably considered a request from Charlie Tompkins and Jeff Light of the Rappahannock Association for the Arts and Community (RAAC) to endorse this year’s Fourth of July celebration as a “County Festival” and to provide up to $3000 to help cover costs for the event.
The county endorsement and financial support for “Festival 2000!” will enable RAAC to eliminate parking fees for county residents and should help promote the participation of more Rappahannock families and businesses. This year’s event, according to the handouts provided by RAAC, will include a Rappahannock produce and fanners’ market, artists and craftsmen, vendors and exhibits, civic organizations, and “family fun,” with the emphasis on Rappahannock.
Supervisor Bryant Lee spoke in favor of the county endorsement and financial assistance, but noted that he was concerned that the funding would create an unwelcome precedent. Supervisor Roger Welch also expressed his support for the endorsement and concern for the financial aspect, stating “we’ve got this money here, and everyone wants a piece of it.”
Washington Town Mayor Stewart Willis commented that the Fourth of July celebration “is a community affair that the town has supported for a number of years for the community. This year is a special event— truly a community affair.”
Board chair Pete Estes voiced his support for this year’s event, and suggested that the $3,000 could come out of the supervisors’ budget surplus and not the general fund. The motion was made by Chairman Estes, seconded by Supervisor Anderson, and unanimously approved.
