will strut — they do strut — up to the cover, snatch a piece of bread and fly away with it. This behavior attracts other grackles, and much sooner than I wish, the bread is gone and they are back at the feeder gobbling up sunflower seed.
Cracked com is also favored by the big black birds. Since cracked com is relatively inexpensive, it can be used to lure grackles away from the feeder where they take time to pick up enough grains to satisfy their voracious appetites.
Even more interesting is something I have observed recently. Grackles are early to roost. Well before sunset, they fly a short distance to the ivy-covered trees growing around the foundation of the
95.6%
