As much as my husband and I admired Hearthstone, we felt we would have to take a long look at what it would mean to us financially (another bam to renovate and adapt to school building code requirements) and how such an increase would affect traffic and noise on the property. We also asked professionals what impact it would have upon county roads and the tranquility of our neighbors. At length, being satisfied that the reports we received indicating that the presence of the school with increased enrollment would have no, appreciable effect, we were persuaded to budget for the renovation and petition the Planning Commission on behalf of the school.
At the public hearing on March 15, a compromise enrollment figure of 75 was settled upon to go into effect whenever the renovated bam would be ready at the permanent site. An extension of the temporary status of the present school site was approved for two years.
We feel privileged to have been afforded an opportunity to aid what we believe is a worthy educational effort. The school is only one of the many organizations we have been honored to support.
In the last decade, by giving his services as performer in some thirty concerts, TV programs and the like, my husband has been instrumental in raising over $20,000,000 for UNICEF, UNHCR, UNESCO, the World Life Fund for Nature, a hospital in Senegal, inoculation campaigns for the street children of Rio de Janeiro, an additional wing to a clinic for deaf children in London and so on. This February, at ^ benefit concert conducted by my husband in London, $170,000 was raised for the Sargent Cancer Fund for children.
Both of us come from families of very modest circumstances. We feel fortunate that the relative success of our life’s work has allowed us to return in some small measure to society what we have received from it.
As a mother, I am baffled and saddened to see that the misinformed have been publicly so insensitive to the children of Hearthstone. It is after all the children who suffer when the future of their home is threatened. As a wife, I find it appalling that on the
