As soon as they disappear, cardinals, white-throats, juncos, titmice, chickadees, and nuthatches flock to the feeder. I have started putting out more seed at that time for “the regulars.” Unfortunately, grackles are also early risers and descend on the feeder at sunrise.
I have noticed that even the usually belligerent jays and red-bellied woodpeckers give way to grackles. It’s the numbers of grackles that intimidates. In early March when the first grackle appeared, other species fed with the single bird. As soon as large numbers arrived, the birds gave them all the seed and space.
Grackles are semi-colonial nesters; they build nests quite close to each other. Last year, they nested in the same ivy tangle they are roosting in now.
Readers who have dense stands of cedar or pine near their homes are probably doomed to grackle-presence until June, when nesting season is over and the birds begin to form flocks. Thick evergreens are favored
