George Ashby “Chunk” Nethers, 85, of Front Royal died Friday, March 31 at Warren Memorial Hospital in Front Royal.
Mr. Nethers was born at Woodville in Rappahannock County on July 22, 1914, son of the late James Robert Nethers and Christie Ellen Hawkins Nethers. He married Theresa Carroll, a union of 62 years.
Mr. Nethers was a member of First Baptist Church of Front Royal of which he was a Deacon and Past President of the Men’s Bible Class.
He was a charter member of the Isaac Walton League for many years. He was a Past Master and had been elected an honorary member of Unity Lodge #146 AF&AM of Front Royal; Past High Priest of Hirman Royal Arch Chapter #45. He was a member of the Scottish Right of Freemasonry of Alexandria - 32nd Degree.
Mr. Nethers was a member of Acca Temple Shrine of Richmond; a member of the Blue Ridge Shriners Club and the Blue Ridge Arson Squad.
He was a Past Worthy Patron of Front Royal Chapter #6, Order of the Eastern Star, member of Shenandoah Arts Council of Winchester.
Mr. Nethers was a member and worked with the Shenandoah Area Agency of Aging, previously delivering meals to the homebound.
He was a member of AARP, National and Local and a member of the Warren Heritage Society of Front Royal and a member of the Retirees Club ACTWV 37IT.
Mr. Nethers’ first job after leaving high school was with Merrill Motor Company in Washington, which after much renovation is now The Inn at Little Washington. In 1938 he was employed by American Viscose and retired in 1979 after 41 years of service. At that time the company was
