Dr. John Burns of the Department of Health presented the board with information on the Healthy Families program, and requested that the board allocate $15,000 to be used to fund 25 hours per week of inhome family support workers in Rappahannock County. He noted that there is some likelihood of success in obtaining grant funding for the program, and that the county funds would be used only in the event that such funding is not acquired.

The Healthy Families program, Dr. Bums reported, is designed to provide parenting support in an attempt to eliminate child abuse and other risks to children in “atrisk” families. The program starts with the identification of those “at-risk” families, and their assessment to determine eligibility. Those families that are deemed eligible in the basis of a two to three hour interview are offered the program on a voluntary basis. The family’s strengths and weaknesses are evaluated in tailoring the program that will include assistance from a case worker in developing parenting skills, coordination with other social service agencies,
