At Monday’s Board of Supervisors meeting, County Administrator John McCarthy announced that the Flatwood Refuse and Recycling Center will have its grand opening on Saturday, June 10 at 9 a.m. The opening of the Flatwood facility will result in the closing of the Huntly and Scrabble dumpster sites, as well as the recycling facility located at the Washington Fire Hall. Huntly will close on July 12; Scrabble will close on June 28; and the Washington Fire Hall recycling containers will be removed on June 9.

The burglary and vandalism at the Flatwood Refuse and Recycling Center on May 26 may have been the work of those responsible for the destruction at Montpelier, according to Sheriff Larry Sherertz. “Maybe the same people did that as did Montpelier,” he said. Sheriff Sherertz referred to the similarity of the “signature” of the damage ddne at both Flatwood and Montpelier —apparently both suffered water damage from broken plumbing fixtures, and the destruction at each was of a particularly vicious nature.
The Sheriff also provided an update on the Montpelier investigations. He noted that the Virginia State Police had become involved— they are providing three investigators and their “forensic capabilities are being tapped.” A carload of evidence was taken to the State Police laboratory on Monday.
Sheriff Sherertz seemed confident that the case will be solved. He told the Board of Supervisors that “we are making progress on this case—the case is taking a definite direction.” Budget public hearings
Sheriff Sherertz spoke about the Flatwood and Montpelier cases after making the only public comments at the FY 2001 Budget Public Hearing. The sheriff spoke briefly to reiterate his support for the pay incentives for sheriff’s deputies and for the chief deputy that he first discussed at last month’s budget work session.
