Aileen facility
remediation
Administrator McCarthy reported that cleanup and monitoring plans for the Aileen facility are defined in a Voluntary Remediation Plan and a Site Characterization Report developed by the County in accordance with Virginia Department of Environmental Quality requirements. There is a public comment period of June 1 through July 3 for these documents, and they are available for review at the County Administrator’s office. Written comments will be accepted through the comment period, and public comments may be made at a hearing scheduled for June 22 at 7 p.m.
During the “Public Comment” portion of Monday’s Board of Supervisors meeting there were a few remarks made on the Aileen issue. Vivian Yancey of Amissville asked “why the County was buying the property.” Mr. McCarthy replied that the County wanted to “get control of the environmental issue, get a formerly tax producing property back on the tax roles . . . and get control of industrial zoning in an area that is not ideal industrial land.” County Attorney Peter Luke added that “the other issue is that the owner went into bankruptcy and could not be held liable . . .”
Additional comments and questions pertained to the prospect of downzoning the site, other similar County purchases, and to the ultimate disposition of the property. These and other issues related to the Aileen property can be raised at the public hearing on June 22.
