On May 28 Wakefield Country Day School at Huntly graduated its class of 2000 in the company of friends and family. It was the 21st Commencement to be held at the private school nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains since its founding in 1972. The much anticipated event was memorable in spite of inclement weather which drove the ceremony and reception indoors.
Salutatorian Brittany Hammelman of Warrenton addressed the assembly, speaking of her unique experiences as a Wakefield Country Day School student, of being involved in clubs and sports and the lessons that were learned from them, such as that “winning is more than the score, the team that plays with all their ability and improves wins the game of life.” Of the academics, Miss Hammelman said, “the rigorous curriculum at Wakefield has driven us to meet our potential and push beyond.” ( After the presentation of Prep School Awards, the audience heard an address by Dr. Stephen L. Monfort, Affiliate Professor at George Mason University and Research Veterinarian at the Smithsonian Institution National Zoological Park’s Conservation Research Center in Front Royal.
He spoke to the seniors of three elements required for success. He cited the desire to succeed, the opportunity to succeed, and the expectation of one’s success. He said, “It is clear to me that you students are much more fortunate than I in that the expectations for your success are clearly high, not only from you parents, but from an outstanding faculty of dedicated teachers.”
