The investigation into the vandalism that occurred at the Montpelier mansion on Rt. 231 has entered a new phase.
According to Rappahannock County Sheriff Larry Sherertz, a “carload of physical and forensic evidence” taken from the building and the grounds was delivered to the Virginia State Police laboratory in Fairfax County on June 5 for analysis.
I can’t comment on which direction the investigation is going, but we have three State Police investigators assisting Rappahannock County deputies,” said Sherertz.
Closer to home, “the case is moving along,” according to Sherertz.
Deputies and a State Trooper conducted checkpoints on Rt. 231 near Rt. 618 on the evenings of June 1 and June 2.
The officers asked travelers about suspicious persons or vehicles they might have noticed on May 19 or May 20, when the destruction at Montpelier was believed to have taken place.
“The checkpoints were worthwhile, and we did gather some information that supports the investigation,” said Sherertz.
