Postcard courtesy of Rappahannock Historical Society MONTPELIER: Francis Thornton, one of the earliest settlers on the Virginia frontier, built this home during the first half of the 18th century on a large land grant from the Virginia General Assembly. He carved his initials on a tree and gave his name to the F.T. Valley, Thornton River and Thornton Gap in Rappahannock County.
