Chief Pay Clerk John Richard Harris retired on Thursday, June 1 from the U.S. Coast Guard after 30 years of service. He is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Taylor Harris and the brother of Mrs. Elizabeth DeBergh and Mrs. Jessie Cox of Rappahannock. A picture of Mr. Harris sitting at his office desk, along with a very complimentary history of his past service, appeared in the June issue of the U.S. Coast Guard Magazine. “Washington Cafe” will open for business on Saturday, July 1 under the management of Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Jenkins. The new restaurant will be located in the building occupied at present by Payne’s Grocery, on Main Street in Washington, opposite the Post Office. Regular dinners and short orders will be served. A.C. Latham Jr. of Amissville won the new Plymouth car that was given away in Warrenton last Saturday night: On Friday, June 16 at Thornton Hill, the home of Mrs. William Meade Fletcher in Sperryville, friends of Miss Mary Elizabeth Hite will entertain at a complimentary party honoring Rappahannock’s new authoress, in recognition of her recent publication, “My Rappahannock Story Book,” which is just off the press.
