This being the week before Valentine's Day, I remember the verses we would add to our homemade valentines. You could not go to the store to buy valentines like we do today. So right after Christmas we would start making them.
We would save the colored envelopes from Christmas cards and use them to cut out hearts. We also used construction paper or anything unusual and pretty.
We thought our cards were bfeautiful. Valentine's Day was an important way to let those you love know you were thinkirtg of them.
When I started first grade at what was the Sperryville High School, my first grade teacher was Miss Della Hitt. Several weeks before Valentine's Day she would take a cardboard box and cover it with white paper.
Then we would cut out different sizes of hearts and glue them on the paper. She would cut a slot in the top of the box for us to drop our valentines in. By the time Valentine's Days arrived the box would be almost full.
Each student would either buy or make cards for their classmates. This was a really big day when "Miss Della" handed out the valentines. She called out the students names and we would go up front and receive our valentines. We could not wait to get home and show them to the family, after comparing who got the most.
