A large majority of Americans indicate that they would prefer to spend their final days at home rather than in a hospital. According to a nationwide poll, seven out of ten Americans would like to die amidst the familiar surroundings of their homes. While it is perfectly understandable why most people feel this way, it is also understandable why friends and family members may not feel that they are up to the task of following their wishes. Not everyone is capable of the challenging experience of having a loved one greet death at home. This is but one more reason for us to discuss our wishes and expectations well in advance.
Hard as it may be, discussing your wishes with those you love is helpful, even as the process unfolds.
