into the locker room at the half. They never let the JV Cougars back in the game and finished going away with their first District win 45 to 29. Sophomore Gregg Jackson led all scorers with 18 points and Andrew Gordon added 13.
For the Junior Panthers it was their Grand Finale as they traveled to Signal Knob Middle School in Strasburg for their last contest of the season. It was just two weeks ago that the JP's had beaten this team here at the RCHS gym 32 to 26 and revenge was on the minds of their opponent. But it was not to be as the young Panthers showed supporters and opponents alike how far they had come.
They soundly beat the Signal Knob team 50 to 29 going away. Eighth grader Ethan Berry led all scorers with 18 points and Eric Phillips added 11 points and 12 rebounds. It's been quite a first year for the young squad as they finished their season winning four of their last five games and sending their future Bull Run District opponents a signal that they were truly a team to be reckoned with.
Coaches Mike Leake and Gary Settle have done a superb job in developing what is most certainly a growing "bright spot" on the basketball horizon for Panther fans.
Volleyball
On Tuesday Jan. 30, the Lady Panthers hosted the Lady Generals from Stonewall Jackson High School. It was a rematch of a game played at Stonewall in December when the Lady Panthers lost the match two games to none. Unfortunately on Tuesday night the results were the same with the Varsity and Junior Varsity both falling two games to none.
On Wednesday, Jan. 31, the Lady Panthers turned around and hosted the Lady Cougars from Manassas Park. Their first meeting at Manassas Park back on Jan. 9, had resulted in a tough third game loss 18 to 16 that won the match for the Cougars.
The Rapp girls hoped to change that here last week. The Junior Varsity Lady Panthers set the stage that night by beating the JV Lady Cougars two games to none and winning the match 15 to 8 and 15 to 13.
The Varsity Lady Panthers lost the first game, short several of their key players, by the score of 15 to 7. The second game saw them roar back and beat the Lady Cougars 15 to 11. In the third and deciding game, they just seemed to lose their poise and composure, falling 15 to 1 and losing the match two games to one.
