pounder: Never underestimated for his strength, Scroggins has continued to improve his wrestling skills, which kept him in the match.
In their second match of the day, Rappahannock showed their hard practices were paying off. Scoring a huge 59-24 win over Wilson Memorial, the Panthers started getting noticed in the gymnasium. In the biggest comeback of the day, sophomore Jeremy Graves came from a 11-5 deficit and displayed a never give up attitude, pinning his opponent in the third period. Graves drew the attention of the large Orange crowd throughout the day.
Bob Lillard, a noted wrestling authority from Orange, related to Coach Wells how impressed he was with Graves' wrestling spirit. Freshman Jonathan Bankston (112), senior Jake Crane (145), junior Houston Hanes (152), Chris Graves and Jeff Scroggins all pinned their opponents.
Garner Smythe had a technical fall, sophomores Jonathan Robinson (103), Cody Rodriguez (125) and senior Daan Riemeijer (171) received forfeits.
Rappahannock, in their third match, showed the importance of having a full team of varsity and junior varsity wrestlers. Manassas Park, hurt by a series of injuries and academic suspensions, was forced to give forfeits in seven of their fourteen weight classes in the 5428 win by Rappahannock. A forfeit counts as much as a pin — six team points. Lead by number one ranked Gutteridge (160) and number four Lerchenfield (140), MP earned four pins and one major decision from their eight wrestlers.
Pinning for Rappahannock were Daan Rieneijer and Jeff Scroggins. Receiving forfeits were Jonathan Bankston, junior John Ferdetta (119), freshman Bill Tucker (130), freshman Stuart Hensley (135), Jake Crane (145), Houston Hanes (152), and Jeremy Graves. Chris Graves wrestled very strong against Gutterridge before falling with one minute left.
Wrestling, at this time of the year, shows its grueling nature with numerous teams losing wrestlers. Teams such as Rappahannock with its larger number of wrestlers can, thus win on the overall strength of the entire squad. By going three and one on the day, Rappahannock won second place in their group and was to face Madison County who won second in theirs. Madison lost to Orange and beat host Stuart Draft and Grayson County.
