For the past few months I have been contemplating going to Wales to hike Cader Idris in the mountains of Merionethshire. Legend has it that whoever dares to stay a night there wakes either a madman or a poet. A true challenge to my enthusiastic hiker/poet nature and not one that I am likely to pass up.

Instead that experience became a reality here in Rappahannock in what they call Hazel Land along the Hazel River. On Thursday, Jan. 25 around 3 p.m. I decided to do a fast hike up Sam's Ridge Trail and back down before sunset.

Unfortunately I did not know the path real well and went down White Rocks trail by mistake. Dark was descending quickly and I lost the path, traveled here and there, and ended up in a part of the mountains where you ; could hear water running through the roots of big trees.

I wedged myself between the two trunks of one tree. It was a very cold windy night and I stopped walking around so I could retrace my steps in the morning and spent most of the night moving my body and toes around and around for my feet really hurt and was I afraid of hypothermia.
