Valentine sayings were often used in autograph books and sometimes written in books. There was no school year book at this time, so many students had an autograph book for their friends and teachers to write nice poems and sentiments in. Such as these:

I would take my autograph book to school near the end of the school year, not only did my friends write in it, but my teachers as well. I have enjoyed the many memories this book brings to me each time I read it.
