In this way quirky mystery set in Paris, rival gangs of thugs (The Asians with huge, mirrored sunglasses, the French with small, wraparound sunglasses) are each seeking a cassette tape. The Asians want an underground tape of Cynthia Hawkins (Fernandez) performing, as she refuses to record and will perform only live.
The French want a tape of a confession implicating the Paris Police Superintendent in a prostitution/drug/slavery ring. In the center of the controversy is a poor postal carrier (Jules) who made the tape of Hawkins because of his great love of her music.
During the course of events, Jules meets the shoplifting Vietnamese waif, Alba, who lives with a rich, eccentric guy in a massive loft where she roller skates arpund and the boyfriend assembles a huge puzzle on the floor while playing very odd music.
These two have a huge part in Jules' escape from the various thugs. There are some great vehicle chases, including Jules' careening ride throughout the Paris Metro on a motorbike.
Meanwhile, Jules continues his infatuation with the lovely Diva, and ultimately returns to her the recording he made of her, she is actually thrilled to hear herself for the first time. The bad guys all get it in the end, which is as it should be.
