Mr. Warner asked what Starting salaries would be for teachers after the increase, and Dr. Gangel said that starting salaries are now $27,495, and would increase to $30,000 with the proposed increase. He compared that to starting salaries in other nearby jurisdictions, including Fairfax ($32,000), Montgomery County ($33,000), and Washington, DC ($30,000). Mr. Warner, apparently agreeing with the proposed salary increase, said that he hoped that "this nine percent would get us close” and would enable the school system to scale back the level of increase next year.
Dr. Gangel noted that revenue projections from State and Federal sources are just slightly lower than last year. The increases in the salary and capital budgets though appear that they may add in excess of $1,000,000 to the •budget and, if no additional funds are available from State ■and Federal sources, this increase will have to be borne locally. If the penny rate remains close to what it was Hast year, the school budget ;increase could well equate to a property tax increase well in excess of 10 cents per thousand dollars of assessed valuation.
