The road winds beside the Thornton River to Old Hollow. At the intersection of Route 612 Old Hollow Road and Thornton Gap Church Road sits the Thornton Gap Primitive Baptist Church. The date of birth was 1787, with the present building built in 1916.
We travel these roads often and see the church so peaceful and still. We know there have been many members from the hollow who have attended and were very dedicated, not only years ago, but even today, because services are still being held there.
There are not as many members today, but there is one member who is 105. She can not see or hear well, but she can remember the old hymns and can sing them today from memory.
The church has been special to some of my relatives. My grandfather would ride his mule to the church services. These were held only once a month.
As my mother wrote in one of her letters, after he became old and feeble, the last Sunday he attended church he had to lay down on the church bench. The preacher, Elder John B. Jenkins covered him with his overcoat.
Elder John B. Jenkins was Pastor when the Primitive Baptist Church built this meeting house. The first service was held on Sunday, October 1916.
He came from the StanleyMarkesville area and would walk across the mountain, spending the night with one of the families. He would walk down the mountain on Sunday morning to the church. He was one of the most widely known ministers in many Southern States.
My mother and father were married in this church on Dec. 15, 1920. Years later my mother would ride a horse to church using a side saddle. This was the proper way for ladies to ride with both legs on the same side. I can remember riding in front of her, this not a very comfortable ride.
