If you are interested in helping the disabled in our community, there is a new State Plan for Independent Living now being written in Richmond that could use your input. This plan contains goals, strategies and budgetary impacts of independent living initiatives. The Statewide Independent Living Council is asking the public to comment on this draft plan to assure that this plan meets the needs of Virginia’s people with disabilities.
What this plan can do is empower persons with significant disabilities to be able to live more independent, effective lives, improving the quality of their lives. It can help establish new Centers for Independent Living and assist the existing Centers with additional funds to support more services available to the disabled public.
The closest Center for Independent Living is in Culpeper and is open one day week, on Mondays. With additional funding, this center could be open all week, providing information and advocacy to the disabled community in Orange, Madison and Rappahannock counties.

Annual Bland
contest slated for
Feb. 25
Now is the time for all young musicians to time up their instruments and vocalize their voices. The Rappahannock Lions Club has sponsored annual Bland Music contests for many years as part of a statewide program dedicated to encouraging students skills and to provide a showcase for their unique talents.
This year’s competition is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 25 at The Theatre in Washington. Student musicians are eligible to participate if they reside in Rappahannock or are attending school in the
