Budget lobbying
Paul Gall, President of the Rappahannock County School Sports Association (RCSSA), spoke to the Board of his organization's perspective on sports and the budget process." He emphasized community interest for school athletics and student athletes by calling for a show of support from those in the audienceand nearly fifty meeting attendees stood. He said that the schools "have been neglecting the kids "-Rappahannock County teams have a history of "too much losing," he said, and he encouraged the Board to reverse Rappahannock sports performance by providing adequate funding.
Mr. Gall provided some statistics to show that there is broad student interest in school athletics: 217 8th through 12th graders out of a population of 415 (52 percent) try out for 22 sports teams, and 183 of those (44 percent of the student population) will make a team. This level of interest, he said, dictates that the School Board pass a budget that includes funding for a full time athletic director and for the basic "costs of doing Isports] business," and the RCSSA, he added, will help with the extras.
