Prescribed Burns
After some seventy years of lingering animosity and
still under the shadow of the smoke from last
year’s park fires, one would think that our neighbors to the west would be more sensitive to the needs of their neighbors.
The management of the Shenandoah National Park though apparently feels that they have some divine right to do that which they will within the boundaries that define their kingdom—and that those of us who look up to the mountains every morning are also looking up to them. The former may be true, but the latter is surely not.
Their announcement about impending prescribed bums in the SNP came to us not in the form of a public discussion at the high school auditorium or even as a “letter to our neighbors,” but we heard it either on news radio or read the March 16 press release online or in the Washington Post. Scientifically valid or not, prescribed bums in the SNP are of concern to those of us who live within breathing distance of the Park, and a good neighbor would ask and not tell. Shame on you.
