In my opinion, accurate information is the key to opening a constructive dialogue. Without such a dialogue, we will be unable to take a proactive, comprehensive approach, one that will enable us to meet the challenges facing the fire and rescue services head on.
I think it is safe to say that all of us who have volunteered in the fire and rescue business, know what it feels like to be a “crew of one,” unable to come to the aid of a neighbor, because your fellow volunteers . can’t respond when the tones sound (we too have families, work, errands, etc.).
I cannot imagine what it must be like to be the one experiencing the emergency, waiting, hoping that someone will soon be there to help. How long that wait is - is up to each and everyone of us. Please, take the time to volunteer and to encourage your county representatives to preplan.
Ask the hard questions now, both of yourself and your local supervisor, and don’t stop asking until the answers make sense. Here’s hoping we meet at the firehouse or local carnival to say hello and not in the middle of your emergency.
