McCarthy noted that Rappahannock and Fauquier counties did share many interests and regional connections in addition to having the same delegate. Both counties are in the 20th Judicial District, both are members of Planning District 9, and both are served by the same Virginia State Police Division.
As a minority member of a new district, “Rappahannock will probably be the low man on the totem pole,” remarked McCarthy. “But at least we haven’t been split three ways, like Fauquier.”
The proposed Senate redistricting plan (designated “Sen. Kevin Miller - 1”) mirrors the House plan, putting Rappahannock with Page and Shenandoah counties, but also adding Warren County (31,584), the City of Harrisonburg (40,468), and 14 Rockingham County precincts (37,801) in a new 26th District totaling 175,088 residents.
The first reading of the House and Senate bills — with possible amendments — was scheduled for Tuesday evening, April 10.
The final vote on the redistricting plans for the Virginia House and Senate should be completed by April 12.
