By Don Audette • Rappahannock News Writer ; From about 1915 to 1925, [major highways in the United States were known only by •their names. The famous !“named” roads were usually the result of self-serving highway associations founded by Ipromoters, chambers of comtnerce, and businessmen.
Thus came into being such roads as the Lincoln Highway, Bankhead Highway, Dixie Highway, Atlantic-Pacific Highway, Pikes Peak Ocean-toOcean Highway, and Victory Highway. These highway associations did not build the roads; they just promoted them.
Things usually started with some vision and the selection of end points. A highway association would then be formed, a board of directors chosen, and by-laws drawn up. The association next stirred up enthusiasm at the federal, state, city, town, and county level to connect all the major population centers in between the highway’s end points. Everyone along the way would be told they would gain from economic development, increased land values, and the prestige accruing to their community because of the road.
