He also helped to establish the Reliance Credit Union. He was a veteran of the United States Army being stationed in the Philippines during World War II.
He was a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Scottish Rite, Rising Sun Lodge, A1 Koran Shrine, Grotto Hall, Reliance Retiree’s and Ashtabula Rotary Club.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Amy Jo Merritt and J. Greg Merritt of Boston; a granddaughter, Sarah Elizabeth Merritt of Boston; two sisters, Nellie Eileen Wood and Louise McCoy and one brother, Richard Lee Hoskins, all of Florida.
He was predeceased by his parents and wife of 58 years, Alice E. Field.
Memorial services and burial at Edgewood Cemetery will be held at a later date.
Found and Sons Funeral Chapel in Culpeper was in charge of the arrangements.
Julia Smith

Julia T. Smith, 70, of Front Royal died Sunday, May 20 at Royal Haven in Front Royal.
Memorial services were conducted on Tuesday, May 22 at Calvary Episcopal Church with Rev. Deborah Rutter officiating.
Mrs. Smith was bom Jan. 29, 1931, in Rappahannock County, a daughter of Raymond W. and Bertha Chadwell Thompson.
She was retired as Activities Director for the Lynn Care Center and had served as Director of Volunteer Services and Director of the Business Office for Warren Memorial Hospital.
She was a member of Calvary Episcopal Church having served on the vestry and as Lay Reader. She was a member of the Valley Ladies Chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America Inc.
Surviving are a son, Alan B. Smith; a daughter, Pamela Seekford; a sister, Margaret T. Boies, all of Front Royal and a brother, Harry H. Thompson of San Antonio, Texas.
Arrangements were handled by Maddox Funeral Home in Front Royal.
Ralph Lane
Rixeyville resident
Ralph R. Lane, 79, of Rixeyville died Thursday, May 17 at Culpeper Regional Hospital.
He was bom July 24, 1921 in Pocahontas County, W.Va. to the late James Lane and Rose Blake Lane.
Mr. Lane is survived by his wife, Elsie May Stanley Lane of Rixeyville; eight children, Joseph Stanley and his wife, Carolyn, Russell Lane and his wife, Kathy, and Carl Lane and his wife, Cathy all of Culpeper; Larry Stanley and his wife, Bonnie of Waynesboro, Elizabeth Rhoades of her husband, Mike of Union ville, Wayne Lane and his wife, Cathy of Castleton, Ricky Lane of Marshall, Michael Lane and his wife Lisa of Spotsylvania.
Additional survivors include 16 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers and two sisters.
