A large crowd attended the public auction of county schools last Saturday in front of the Courthouse in Washington. The total sale price for the four elementary school properties was $15,950 with the highest price for the Amissville School selling for $6,000 to Col. Earl E. Holmes. Belle Made was knocked off to Mrs. Marie Hite for $3,500; Flint Hill Elementary to the Flint Hill Volunteer Fire Company for $3,850 and the Woodville property to Raymond Johnson for $2,600.
A donkey baseball game sponsored by the Rappahannock Rescue Squad will be played at Moffett’s Field, Washington on May 26. Donkey baseball is considered the worlds’ craziest sport and thrills, kicks and spills can be expect. Judge R.V. Snead says that he will not try. Bertna Armel stated over Big K radio station that she will ride in the ball game if Supervisor E. Estes will. It sounds intriguing!
A helicopter demonstrating aerial spraying before a large group of Rappahannock County apple growers, crashed May 24 in the orchard of H.B. Winfrey at Woodville. The pilot was taken to the hospital but was able to return to his home.

In a photo: Cousins by marriage and fellow family history buffs, Dr. Tom Updike and Mrs. Clara Updike shared bits of family lore during a visit. Dr. Updike, who lives in Richmond, was in the county recently for the annual meeting of the Rappahannock Mental Health Association.
