Soccer
Maybe it was because they already had won the District Championship the game before. Maybe it was because they weren’t focused and were looking ahead to the playoffs. Maybe it was because they underestimated their opponent - those always tough, Madison County Mountaineer teams. Maybe they just had an off day. Whatever it was, it didn’t look good.
The Boys’ soccer team was soundly beaten by Madison at the Mountaineer home field on Tuesday, May 15 in their final game of the regular season. The final score was 3-0, but it could have been twice that, because the Panthers didn’t come to play.
Although the game had no effect on the seeding for the post-season tournament or the final standings, it did little to build pre-tournament confidence in the team or send any signals to the rest of the District that Rapp intended to stay on top. It was a disappointing loss to say the least and hopefully, Head Coach Carl Gray can use this defeat to motivate his chargers before their first tournament game Thursday, May 24.
As a matter of fact, after the game Coach Gray commented, “I think Madison may have done us a favor. This is going to show the boys what they have to do to win a title.”
The girls’ team easily hung onto third place in the District as they finished their regular soccer season with a 3-0 victory over the Lady Mountaineers at Madison. Sophomore Adrianne Moore continued to hammer the opposition nets with another two-goal game and senior Ashley Dunn had a nice header to complete the scoring for the Lady Panthers. They finish the season 5-4-1, good enough for third place and setting them up to host a quarter final game in the District Tournament on Tuesday, May 22 at home.
The Rappahannock County Junior Panthers (eighth grade boys’ team) has been unable to schedule any other middle school games this season, as no one else in our District has a middle school soccer team. In an effort to keep the team together for another week or so before this first season ends, JP Head Coach Kenny Rodgers and Varsity Assistant Boys Coach Mark Ramey, rounded up a local travel team from Culpeper - the U-12 Comets - and hosted them in a game here on Monday, May 14.
The Jr. Panthers completed a lopsided 9-0 victory over the visiting Comets, with eighth grader James Jackson and sixth grader David Clement each collecting two goals apiece for the JPs. The Junior Panthers have been a credit to their name this first season and hopefully, will continue to grow as the soccer program continues to develop here at the high school.
