On Wednesday, May 16 a small contingent of Rappahannock County High School track athletes traveled to Brentsville District High School for the 2001 Bull Run District Track Championships. All seven schools - Rappahannock, Madison County, Clarke County, Strasburg, George Mason, Manassas Park and Brentsville District High Schools - were there and represented with athletes, student supporters, family members, and fans. Against this backdrop of track and field excitement, young Cook made a statement that the whole Bull Run District heard loud and clear - “I can run and I can run fast!”
She not only took first in the 100m run, but she tied the meet record with a time of 12.8 seconds. She also took first in the 200m run with a time of 27 seconds flat and came in third in the long jump with a leap of 15’ 2”. There is no question that this girl can just get up and go.
Unlike many of her competitors at the meet, Cook seldom spends time training for these events, since she was called up to the varsity softball team to fill an emergency outfield vacancy. This undoubtedly will impact on her achieving her best times this season, but nevertheless, she is on her way to the Region B Track Championships, which will be held at the University of Virginia track in Charlottesville on Thursday, May 24.
Also accompanying Ms. Cook will be four other RCHS track athletes whose performance at the District Tournament earned them a birth in the Regional Contest.
Those athletes are: B . J . Christian senior, fifth place in the shot put 40’11”; Phillip Thomas, junior, third place in the 800m 2:07.8 minutes; Jessica Nawrocki, junior, second place in the shot put 30’ 7”; Zach Bridgeman, sophomore, fifth place in the 100m 12.3 seconds, fifth place in the 400m 55.0 seconds.
