floodplain. Climbing down to examine the layers of sediment, they were amazed to see the three feet of soil that had accumulated since the flood of 1995. Nancy Utz, conservation technician with NRCS, handed out earthworms to impress upon the young naturalists the role that these macroinvertebrates play in soil formation.
A hands-on experiment set up on the tailgate of her pickup truck brought home the importance of plants in preventing erosion during stormwater events.
Brad White, a conservation technician of the CSWCD, and John Jeffries a conservation technician with NRCS, familiarized students with topographical maps of the area, and discussed the interplay between topography and the formation of a river’s channel. The flood in 1995 had severely eroded the banks and floodplain of the river, and a great deal of restoration work has been done by various agencies, organizations and numerous volunteers.
Cynthia DeCanio, an environmental educator and staff member with Friends of the Rappahannock who has been working with several agencies during the river restoration project, demonstrated how to plant trees and shrubs alonp the buffer zone of the river $b prevent erosion and help the river maintain a stable channel. Wielding shovels and toting buckets of water, erstwhile teams of students planted trees along the river banks and on the floodplain. 1 >
Deemed a success by $fl present, the field day met th£ organizer’s goal of familiari2fing students with many of tfye soil and water conservation issues associated with rivers and the land through which they run. The seventh gradefs gained a deeper understanding of the complexity of the interactions among land artd water, plants and animals, and the importance of keeping a balance among these natural resources.
