Virginia. An Alexandria to Winchester route had originally been proposed, and Virginia state officials had said that such a road would be built.
However, the Winchester route was circuitous and headed off to the northwest, thus violating a Lee Highway “direct route” principle, in this case a line to the southwest.
At the suggestion of the Chairman of the Virginia State Highway Commission, Wade H. Massie of Rappahannock County, the matter of route location was re-opened. Exactly 80 years ago, the Lee Highway Association had to decide if it was better to drive from Gainesville to New Market via Front RoyalStrasburg, or go by way of Luray.
