Since the first Purple Martin

arch 13 it is looking as though this year will be our best ever. Adult Purple Martins return to the same $lace each year to raise their offspring if the site was reliable the year before. * About a month after the adults arrive the yearling birds (birds hatched last year) will begin to arrive. These are the birds that colonize new sites. , I tried for 8 years, read many books and had lots of help from family and friends before I attracted my first pair of martins. The first attempt was made in 1987. I had a handsome, wooden martin house that was handmade by my Grandfather, which was bolted atop a one-piece metal pole. The European Starlings loved it and had it packed with debris by the time martins arrived. I read some more. : / After three to four years I received a- 12-room aluminum martin house as a-gift and retired the wooden house. The new aluminum house was on a telescoping pole, allowing us to safely raise and lower the house to remove starling nests. The martins would fiild the house and circle it, then leave. After two to three more years of reading I realized the problem. The house was in a fence row and the
