After a briefing before the Washington Town Council by Jeffrey Light on the prospective County historic survey, Mayor Stew Willis got Council okay on his motion to donate $1,000 in Town funds for that effort. When added to the County contribution of $2,000 and the $11,525 in donations received (as of the Board of Supervisors meeting of Aug. 6), the Town's contribution leaves the historic survey fund still some $5,500 shy of the $20,000 estimated survey budget.
Jeff Light, who has been serving as the coordinator of an ad hoc committee of County organizations and | individuals who are promoting the survey, told the Council of the process by which the survey program would be implemented with the Virginia Department of Historic Resources, and of the benefits to the County and to the Town of Washington.
He noted that the survey will, among other things, provide a baseline of knowledge of the County’s historic resources that will “become a foundation for future work.”
